QR Codes and Barcode Printers
Quick Response (QR) codes are not new to labeling. They were designed in Japan (1994) for the automotive industry.
These 2-dimensional informational codes store approximately 2,000 characters of product information. These barcodes use patterns and shapes to encode data. The shapes are arranged both vertically and horizontally. Hence, the name, 2-D.
There are two benefits to using a 2-D barcode:
- To begin with, 2-D barcodes contain more information than traditional 1-D barcode.
- To compare, the 1-D linear barcode (right side of label) contains only 2-25 informational characters.
- Also, the 2-D barcodes consume less product label space.

QR Barcode Information:What to Include
There is no formula for information to be included in a QR barcode. Your guiding questions might be:
- What should my customer KNOW about this product?
- What isn’t on my product label?
To create your QR code and embed product information, software is required. Barcode Southwest suggests using Bartender Professional Edition software by Seagull Scientific Once you have purchased your barcodes, this software allows you to easily generate QR codes.

Considerations for QR Codes
- First is the size of the label needed.
- Second is data to be embedded.
- Finally, the positioning of the code on the label.
