Barcode Printer Maintenance: Platen Roller and Print Head
The two most critical components to continued smooth operation of your barcode printer (industrial OR desktop printer) are the platen roller and the printhead.
- The platen roller is a friction-driven feeding system. The printed labels are fed by the soft rubber platen roller. A dust-free platen roller is crucial because:
- Labels feed smoothly.
- Labels stay “clean.”
While the platen roller is relatively inexpensive to replace, it is print head replacement that can be costly.
- The print head is a line of pixels. These pixels function as a series of “lightbulbs” that turn on and off during the print process.
- Clogged pixels will result in streaks or voids on your labels.
- Barcodes with streaks or voids can be “unscannable” by your Zebra Barcode Scanner.
There are four easy maintenance steps to keep in mind:
- Clean the printer.
- Clean the printhead.
- Control (to the extent possible) the environment.
- Use quality materials (ribbons and labels).
- REMEMBER: Buy all materials for current application, printer lifespan and future use! Do not purchase by price!
