Polypropylene labels (BOPP), are a widely used synthetic material used when plain paper labels are not suited for the environment. Polypropylene labels, or BOPP labels, are made for either direct thermal or thermal transfer printers. These lables are more appropriate for labeling in colder more humid Houston, TX environments than are paper labels. Polypropylene label materials are available in matte or glossy finish,
Benefits of Polypropylene Labels
- Moisture (condensation) resistant
- Durable (tear resistant)
- Aggressive adhesive suited for a variety of surfaces
- Resistant to chemicals (Drum and Hazard Labels)
- High quality imaging (Zebra, TSC, and Datamax thermal printers)
There are several environmental factors to keep in mind when considering the use of polypropylene labels. A first factor is these durable labels are well-suited for long-term use with cold or frozen items as well as outdoor hot or cold applications. Another consideration is BOPP’s scratch and chemical resistant coating for label content imaging especially with Drum Labels.
Which Barcode Printer Should I Use To Image Polypropylene Labels?
To determine the answer, ask these three questions:
- What is the estimated lifespan of the labels and their images?
- Will the Polypropylene labels be stored indoors or outdoors?
- What is the average temperature and/or for the storage environment?
Consider Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal printers to determine which is best fits your application.
Thermal Transfer- With the correct thermal transfer ribbon, BOPP labels present a clean crisp image. With an aggressive adhesive, BOPP performs very well in extreme hot or cold Houston, TX environments. Because thermal transfer is not a heat sensitive material, you can expect a long lifespan in hot environments.
Direct Thermal- BOPP labels also image extremely well with ribbonless barcode printers. Because direct thermal is a heat sensitive material, you can expect a long lifespan in Cool to Cold Environments.
