Durable labels for harsh environments are crucial to maintain the image printed on your products. The two most common durable label materials are polypropylene and polyester. Call Barcode Southwest 888-764-9965 to learn more about matching label material with your environment.
Durable Labels for Harsh Environments
When looking for durable labels for harsh environments, there are two types of label materials to consider.
Polypropylene Label Material
Polypropylene, more commonly known as BOPP, is a widely-used synthetic material. This material is ideal when plain paper labels are not suited for harsh environments.
- This durable label material works well with direct thermal or thermal transfer printers.
- These durable labels are perfect for labeling in colder, more humid environment.
- Polypropylene label materials are available in matte or glossy finish.

Benefits of Polypropylene Durable Labels
There are five reasons to consider using this label material for harsh environments.
- Durability (tear resistant).
- Aggressive adhesive suited for a variety of surfaces.
- Resistant to moisture and condensation.
- Chemical resistant making them great for Drum and Hazard Labels.
- High quality imaging (Zebra, TSC, and Printronix thermal printers).
There are two environmental factors to keep in mind when considering the use of durable polypropylene labels in your harsh environment.
A first factor is these durable labels are well-suited for long-term use with outdoor hot or cold applications as well as items that require cold/frozen storage.
Another consideration is BOPP’s scratch and chemical resistant coating. This coating is especially useful on Drum Labels.

Barcode Southwest recommends the Printronix T8000 thermal printer for printing drum or other large format labels.

Polyester Label Material
Polyester labels are the second type of durable label material for harsh environments. This strong label material is designed for the toughest of conditions.
Benefits of Polyester Labels
There are five benefits to using polyester label material.
- First, this material is stronger than vinyl and is also tear-resistant.
- Next, these labels can withstand exposure to oils, many chemicals and solvents making them perfect for use with drum labels.
- Third, polyester labels endure a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels.
- A fourth reason is the “tacky” adhesive.
- Finally, this durable label material works well with direct thermal or thermal transfer printers.
